O’Connell River Bank Restoration – Stream Clearing & Rock Protection
Project outcome was to remove sand and gravel that had built up in the main channel which was restricting stream flows and diverting the flow of the river towards the adjacent bank. The built up island with sand had been removed and the eroded section of the bank had been stabilised. This project had a budget of $530,000.
The groyne was placed to divert smaller flows away from the eroded section of river bank and promote material deposits behind the groyne and adjacent to the bank. Excavated material from the stream was also placed in severely erode areas behind the groyne and to the adjacent bank.
Eroded area of bank before project commencement. Excavated material utilised to fill eroded areas. Existing topsoil was stripped and replaced.
Filling eroded area with rock protection placed to the bank batter. Additional topsoil was imported for proposed re-vegetation works.
Mangroves in front of the rock were protected and maintained. Rocks were placed to batter and toe of bank. This will help alleviate erosion caused by tidal effects.
